How to Identify a V-Belt

The V-belt is a transmission belt that connects V-belt pulleys and function as a power transmitting element in machinery. V-belts are commonly used in automobile engines. There are many different types of belts and, should you need to complete maintenance and repair that includes replacing a belt, it is helpful to be able to identify whether or not the belt is a V-belt.

To be able to successfully identify a V-belt, you must understand the unique features that set it apart. MachineDesign provides a helpful description of V-belts that will assist in identifying them, “V-belt drives are also easy to install, require no lubrication, and dampen shock load… V-belts, with a trapezoidal or V shape, made of rubber, neoprene, and urethane synthetic materials, replaced flat belts. Now, the increased overall surface material of modern belts adheres to pulley grooves through friction force, to reduce the tension required to transmit torque. The top part of the belt, called the tension or insulation section, contains fiber cords for increased strength as it carries the load of traction force. It helps hold tension members in place and acts as a binder for greater adhesion between cords and other sections. In this manner, heat build-up is reduced, extending belt life. Prestretched tension-member cords (polyester, aramide, steel, fiberglass) also minimize stretch.”

To identify a V-belt you must first identify its cross section which can be done by measuring it’s top width and depth dimensions and then cross-reference the manufacture’s identification chart. Next, you must measure the length by marking a starting point on the outside of the belt with a flexible measuring tape and measure all the way around the entire outside of the belt back to the original starting point. Finally, once you have determined the specific V-belt you have, you can use your measurements you’ve collected to determine the part number. Using the V-belt type, take the length measured and add the cross section in front of the length and then add a 0 at the end and that will give you a V-belt part number.
